Bondhu
The children of the girls' and boys' homes with Michael and a volunteer

What is Bondhu?

Safety, school and a way out of the brothel.

We work with Shapla Mohila Sangstha, a local family-run charity, and step in wherever help is needed quickly or people fall through the existing safety net.

The Bondhu boys' home

Many of the boys suffered severe abuse growing up in the brothel district. At the Bondhu home they have a safe place to live, round-the-clock care, three meals a day, clothes and tutoring.

Before they joined our programme, none of the children went to school. Today all of them attend a regular state school, and some are close to finishing.

All the children stay in touch with their mothers. They can visit them, and be visited, at any time.

The Shapla girls' home

We originally founded the Bondhu home for boys, because there was already support for the girls. When the girls' home lost its funders, we stepped in so the girls would not have to go back to the brothel.

2025 was the year it mattered. Thanks to your support, the home was saved. It is now funded mainly by the Bondhu project, and so it remains a place of safety, trust and a future.

Training and a way out of the brothel

Until the Covid pandemic we ran a training programme for up to 30 young women rescued from forced prostitution. They learned embroidery and sewing, and with it gained a future.

Nupur, whom Michael searches for in WAS TUN, made it out of the brothel in 2023. The Bondhu project promised her a year of support so she could finish her training as a beautician. Today she lives in safety and freedom.

We have been able to bring individual women out of the prison-like government home to us, some after ten years of confinement. With a pilot project we want to give more women the chance to train in freedom. In 2025, two young women were able to leave the state home after more than ten years and are now taking their first steps towards a self-determined life.

Help when it's urgent

Because we are small and unbureaucratic, we can help in acute emergencies. We have freed girls from child marriages and several women from sexual slavery.

Time and again, the Bondhu project arranges the care needed in medical emergencies. During the Covid pandemic, together with Shapla Mohila Sangstha, we handed out food parcels to every household in the town brothel and the harbour brothel.
